Kōzu-shima (神津島) is a volcanic Japanese island in the Philippine Sea. [1] The island is administered by Tōkyō and is located approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) northwest of the Miyake-jima and 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) southwest of the Nii-jima.
Volcanic activity on the island itself was last recorded in 2002, accompanied by earthquake swarms. The main peak on the island, Iō-yama (硫黄山) has a height of 394 m (1,293 ft), and the island has a circumference of 6.5 km (4.0 mi). The total area of the island is 4.79 km 2 (1.85 sq mi).
The island is a basalt pillar with sheer sides, the only visible portion of a submarine volcanic caldera extending 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) south-east at an average depth of 240 metres (790 ft). The above sea-level portion measures approximately 84 metres east-west and 56 metres north-south, with a summit height of 99 metres (325 ft).
