It is a vine with cylindric stems covered in red-brown hairs when young. Vitis californica, the California wild grape, or Northern California grape, or Pacific grape, is a wild grape species widespread across much of California as well as southwestern Oregon Vitis coignetiae , the crimson glory vine, a species from East Asia grown as an ornamental plant for its crimson autumn foliage
Ampelopsis glandulosa by Abraham Jacobus Wendel, 1868 Fruit and leaves Inflorescence. Ampelopsis glandulosa is a deciduous, woody, perennial climbing vine with flowers and tendrils opposite the palmately lobed leaves, which have three to five more or less deep lobes and coarsely toothed margins (with a small apicle).
The vine produces numerous inflorescences of male flowers with plenteous pollen and a strong fragrance. The inflorescences would then abscess, but occasionally a few flowers produce functional ovaries and at times develop some very small blackish fruit if the climate allows it to, though they don't normally last on the plant and they tend to taste bitter, although birds consume them.
The wild grape is often classified as Vitis vinifera sylvestris (in some classifications considered Vitis sylvestris), with Vitis vinifera vinifera restricted to cultivated forms. Domesticated vines have hermaphrodite flowers, but sylvestris is dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants) and pollination is required for fruit to develop.
The flowers are produced at every 3rd node [2] in a dense panicle 5–15 cm long. The fruit is a small grape 5–14 mm diameter, dark purple or black in colour. [5] It is the official state grape of Missouri. [6] Summer grape prefers a drier upland habitat. [2] The four varieties are: [3] V. a. var. aestivalis
