The following is a list of neighborhoods and communities located in the city of San Diego. The City of San Diego Planning Department officially lists 52 Community Planning Areas within the city, [ 1 ] many of which consist of multiple different neighborhoods.
The neighborhood is defined by the City of San Diego as the area bounded by State Route 52 (SR 52), Interstate 15 (I-15), Aero Drive, and I-805. [6] The city also includes in its definition a stretch of land extending south of Aero Drive along the west side of I-15 to its junction with Friars Road. [6]
Rancho Bernardo is located on the Rancho San Bernardo Mexican land grant made between 1842 and 1845. [6] In the 1960s, Rancho Bernardo was annexed by San Diego. The area was developed by AVCO Community Developers until their involvement ceased in 1984. [7] The Rancho Bernardo Inn opened at the center of the development in 1963. [8]
A 2001 study found the neighborhood to have a median age of 31 and an ethnic breakdown of 53% white, 25% Hispanic, 13% African American, and 9% Asian American. [3] Normal Heights was reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune to be the only neighborhood to perfectly reflect the ethnic diversity of San Diego.
