Until 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire controlled a narrow coastal strip from Kotor (known then as Cattaro) to just south of Petrovac, previously known as the Venetian Albania. At Budva, about half-way along this strip, a road leads through the mountains above the town to Cetinje, the old Montenegrin capital.
The Bay of Kotor (Serbo-Croatian: Boka kotorska / Бока которска, Italian: Bocche di Cattaro), also known as the Boka (Serbo-Croatian Cyrillic: Бока), [1] is a winding bay of the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro and the region of Montenegro concentrated around the bay.
It goes through all the coastal cities in Montenegro (i.e. Herceg Novi, Kotor, Budva, Bar, Ulcinj). It is the starting point of all the highways that start at the coastline and go north like M1.1, M-2, M-8 and M12 and intersects with M-11 in Boka Bay, where M-11 can be used to shorten the distance by with using ferryboat from Kamenari to Lepetani
Kotor hosts several summer events, such as the Summer Carnival or Bokeljska Noć. Together with Budva, and the small town of Tuzi, near Podgorica, the city hosted the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC) World Carnival City Congress in May 2009.
Tivat Airport is located in the Mrčevac settlement, on the southern outskirts of Tivat urban area, 7 km (4 mi) from the Kotor city center, and 20 km (12 mi) north-west of Budva. The passenger terminal is served by Adriatic Highway (E65/E80).
