Conway was born in Chicago, Illinois, the second son of Edwin and Nellie Conway. [1] He attended Our Lady of the Angels School on the city's west side and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago. He studied at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, where he received Bachelor of Philosophy and Master of Divinity degrees.

Coutts joined Our Lady Peace on September 23, 1995, replacing Chris Eacrett after the band's debut album Naveed was produced. Before joining Our Lady Peace, he went to Ridley College and studied film at Toronto's Ryerson University , graduating from The University of Western Ontario in 1993.
