In the United States, the EPA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are the principal federal agencies working with the CEC to define and map ecoregions. Ecoregions may be identified by similarities in geology, physiography, vegetation, climate, soils, land use, wildlife distributions, and hydrology.
The Northern Basin and Range ecoregion is a Level III ecoregion designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. states of Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and California. It contains dissected lava plains, rolling hills, alluvial fans, valleys, and scattered mountain ranges in the northern part of the Great Basin.
California comes in a close second with 13 ecoregions across four biomes in the same realm. By contrast, Rhode Island is the least biodiverse with just one ecoregion—the Northeastern coastal forests—encompassing the entire state. [1] The terrestrial ecoregions of the 50 states of the United States are as follows:
The Colorado River flows through the Mojave, Great Basin, and Sonoran desert. [8] But, differences in seasonal rain create the differing hydrological cycles. The Great Basin receives most its rainfall in the winter. [8] This leads to creation of playa lakes in the spring, as the snowfall melts and flows down surrounding mountains. [13]
The World Wildlife Fund defines the ecoregion as being the northern part of the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests. [citation needed] The Environmental Protection Agency defines it as running from west-central Pennsylvania, east-central and south Ohio, north and northwest West Virginia, and a portion of northeast Kentucky. [2] [3]
The Pennsylvania terrain has also been affected by continental rifting during the Mesozoic era. [2] Pleistocene glaciers have also repeatedly visited the state over the last 100,000 years. These glaciers have left some evidence and carved out much of the landscape of the northern tier of the state. [2]
The ecoregion consists of four separate blocks of mixed forest surrounded by lower lying areas of hardwood forest as follows: the Northern Allegheny Plateau in New York State and Pennsylvania including the Catskill Mountains, the Poconos, the Finger Lakes and French Creek areas.
