In 1809, Finland became part of the Russian Empire and on 6 December 1917, Finland declared its independence from Russia, which initiated the Finnish Civil War. Spain became one of the first nations to recognize Finland's independence on 21 February 1918. Both nations established diplomatic relations on 16 August 1918. [4]
