The name was used to describe Palmerston North also. Somewhat later, the name had become forgotten with the transliteration of Pamutana being preferred (especially by the Native Land Court). [3] The name Papaioea did not resurface until the 1920s, and is sometimes used to refer to Palmerston North as a whole.
Palmerston North Central had a population of 1,116 at the 2018 New Zealand census, a decrease of 102 people (−8.4%) since the 2013 census, and a decrease of 198 people (−15.1%) since the 2006 census. There were 405 households, comprising 579 males and 537 females, giving a sex ratio of 1.08 males per female.
