The Italia was ordered as one of two sisters for the Italian company Sunsarda SpA in 1963, and was one of the first purpose-built cruise ships. Her interiors were designed by Gustavo Finali and Romano Boico, who designed the interiors for other famed Italian liners, such as the SS Raffaello and her sister SS Michelangelo.
SS Leonardo da Vinci was an ocean liner built in 1960 by Ansaldo Shipyards, Italy for the Italian Line as a replacement for their SS Andrea Doria that had been lost in 1956. . She was initially used in transatlantic service alongside SS Cristoforo Colombo, and primarily for cruising after the delivery of the new SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello in 1965.
Because of the unprofitability of the cruise business, the Italian Line turned to freight shipping. It operated its principal container services between the Mediterranean, the west coast of North America, and Central and South America, carrying about 180,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of freight in 2001.
In 1979 she was transferred to Italia Crociere as a full-time cruise ship. This was not a success and she was sold to Costa Lines in 1983. After a two-year rebuild, the ship reappeared as Costa Riviera for Costa Cruises in 1985. Costa Riviera alternated between Caribbean and Alaskan cruising during her time with Costa Cruises. [2]
In 1965 Home Lines took delivery of their first purpose-built ship, Oceanic, which replaced the ageing Italia. [2] [12] Although marketed as "the largest ship ever designed for year round cruises", [13] the ship had in fact been originally designed as a two-class liner/cruise ship before Home Lines abandoned transatlantic crossings, and adapted to full-time cruising during construction. [14]
MS Volendam in Sydney Harbour.. Ordered on 12 July 1996, and was to be built by Fincantieri Cantieri Navali, at the Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy. Volendam is a Rotterdam-class (R-class) cruise ship, a design that was based on the extended hull size of the previous S-class it shared with three sister ships in the Holland America Line fleet; Zaandam, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
