In response to firefighter labor shortages during World War II, the Rainbow Conservation Camp was established as the first permanent fire camp, in 1946. It was modeled after New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps camps. The program grew to 16 camps throughout California in the 40s and 50s, including the first youth camps.

[1] Thirty of those wildfires were part of the Fall 2007 California firestorm, [5] which burned approximately 972,147 acres (about 3,934 km 2, or 1,520 mi 2) of land from Santa Barbara County to the U.S.–Mexico border. Commonly seen models of wildland engines include the Model 14, and 15. CAL FIRE Models 24 and 25 were test-bed models, with only a few of each model fielded. The newest versions of these engines are CAL FIRE model 34 (4WD) and 35 (2WD), manufactured by Placer Fire Equipment, Rosenbauer, and HME. Model 34/35's are currently being fielded statewide.
