Elgin Area School District U46, often referred to as "U-46", is a unit school district headquartered in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. [2] Covering 90 square miles (230 km 2), the district serves portions of eleven communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. [2]
The school was built in 1902 to replace the original Garfield Elementary, which had burned down the previous year. The original school opened in the 1870s and was the first to serve Moline's Stewartville neighborhood; when the new school opened in 1902, it was still the only school in Stewartville.

On October 1, 1908, telephones were ordered for Garfield and Franklin Schools, the first schools to have access to "this marvel of communication". In 1912, the Board of Education decreed that non-resident students "shall pay tuition in advance, at the rate of $2 per month" and required all its teachers to live in the district.
