The Colt is a shortened full-size, 1911A1 variant frame. The Springer EMP is scaled-smaller (think- hot water shrinkage) 1911 (more radically) variant frame. Best bet is to handle & shoot BOTH to determine the ideal fit for YOU. There's a noticeable difference.

If you've firmly decided on 9mm and not .45, then consider that the EMP was designed from the start as a 1911-pattern gun but scaled to the the dimensions of the 9mm cartridge. One of the biggest challenges for a 1911 chambered in 9mm is getting the magazines just right to feed reliably.
The gun shot the Speer 124 gr. +P and Hornady Critical Defense with no problems. I shot close to 150 rounds today and had three rounds nose dive. The same problem I had with my previous 9mm Defender but not with the 9mm New Agent. Last time I fixed the problem by polishing the ramp which I am doing now.
The Defender is a nice pistol. I have recently researched the heck out of this exact topic and ultimately decided to go with the Springfield EMP. Its not that the Defender was bad, its just that the EMP is a really nice pistol and built for 9mm from the ground up. My EMP is dead accurate and runs like it stole something.

I like my Defender I've had this Colt Defender for several years and sometimes carry it. It has functioned perfectly through maybe 1000 rounds of mixed ammo. I find it to be very accurate with a pleasing trigger pull. I use the Kramer horsehide belt scabbard holster shown, which gives excellent concealment for a very flat gun.

Just took the Colt New Agent 9mm out to the range this past weekend. I put 100 rounds of hollow points through it with NO problems. Ammo used was Winchester Supreme Elite 124+p, Speer Gold Dot 115 and 124+p, Federal Hydra Shok 124 and 135 Low Recoil, Hornady Z-Max 115, and Corbon/Glaser Power Ball 100+p.
You CAN get the Defender in Stainless in 9mm. I have one that I bought for my wife. When I take both the .45 & the 9mm to the range, sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference just looking at them until you look at the end of the barrel.
