The Shelby Mustang is a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang built by Shelby American from 1965 to 1967 and by the Ford Motor Company from 1968 to 1970. In 2005, Ford revived the Shelby nameplate for a high-performance model of the fifth-generation Ford Mustang .
On January 17, 2017, Ford officially introduced the refreshed 2018 Mustang. For 2018, Ford discontinued the V6 model and its 300 hp (224 kW) 3.7L Cyclone V6 engine, leaving the EcoBoost, GT, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT350R. The refreshed Mustang sports a restyled front clip and dashboard design, and new standard and optional wheels.
In 1968, Ford offered a special edition of the Shelby Mustang, called the GT500KR, which stood for King of the Road. It had the 428 c.i. Cobra Jet engine introduced the same year. In early 2007, Shelby had announced that they would release a new GT500KR based on S-197 Mustangs for the 2009 model year.
For 2021, the GT350R makes way for the new Mustang Mach 1, which does a reasonable approximation of the slithering Shelby so long as you can live without the flat-plane-crank V8.

A 1971 Mustang (modified to look like a 1973 model), nicknamed "Eleanor", was the feature car in the 1974 car heist film Gone in 60 Seconds. "Eleanor" returned, as a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT500, in the movie's remake in 2000. The remake version of Eleanor featured a custom body kit designed by Chip Foose that has inspired numerous restomods since.
