Quality is probably "good enough for a beginner." The price range might be free for used to over $100 for a shiny new one. The OP's Denali is in this category. The advantage to a used LBS bike for a novice is value--better quality for not a lot more money. Status value is low but not zero. Quality of a used bike can range from poor to excellent.
I would highly recommend buying a good used bike from your LBS, or even Craigslist. Another option is get one from BikesDirect, or even an Ibex bike. They are less expensive road bikes, but much better quality than the GMC. One thing I like about the cheaper Ibex bikes, is they come with eyelets.
Custom fixed gear project - 21 speed GMC Denali road bike This is my first custom break down and rebuild so please give me any suggestions you may have! I bought this blue GMC Denali on Craigslist for $30 since it had been sitting outside for a while and started to get pretty nasty.

I have a 57" GMC Denali road bike. Yah, I know it sucks, please save the rant. I bought it because my doctor wanted me to lower my cholestrol level. Now I found out that I really love biking and feel like a kid again. I plan to get a Motobecane mirage pro for weekend rides and use the Denali as a 12 mile daily commuter.
I know it's not the best bike, but I got it for Christmas last year to get my feet wet. Now that I've been home from college, I've fallen in love with cycling and do it everyday. Those of you not familiar with the platform, it's a 21 speed bike with a twist shifting system. I have a couple of questions.
I saw that same guy. He was riding a repainted Cervelo, painted to look like a GMC Denali probably stolen from CSC at the Giro. Also, it's sometimes safe to assume the guy on the Lightspeed could have been at the end of a 60 mile ride and the guy on the Denali was going 1/2 a mile to his job at a manpurse store, and was running late.
They will go to the Wally-Marts of the world looking for this exact bike. They will purchase it, put 10 miles on it, and hang it up in the garage where it will sit for 5 years until they sell it for $10.00 at a yard sale. That, my freinds, is what I suspect the future holds for the vast majority of GMC Denali road bikes.
I live in New Orleans and really caught the cycling bug after a few trips to Audubon Park. It’s less than a mile from my apartment. I shopped the local bike shops and searched on Craig’s list for a nice used starter bike. The bike shops were out of my budget and Craig’s list was slim pickings. I then found the infamous GMC Denali at Walmart.
The nearest I have come to actually riding a high quality road bike is a Specialized Crossroads "Chick-Bike" that I borrowed for about 4 miles to see how a road bike felt compared to my Mountain Clunker. It was then that I knew I needed a road bike.
