Secular humanism is a philosophy, belief system, or life stance that embraces human reason, logic, secular ethics, and philosophical naturalism, while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision-making.
The document was issued in 1980 by the Council for Democratic and Secular Humanism (CODESH), now the Council for Secular Humanism (CSH). [1] Compiled by Paul Kurtz , it is largely a restatement of the content of the American Humanist Association 's 1973 Humanist Manifesto II , of which he was co-author with Edwin H. Wilson .
The Center for Inquiry was established in 1991 by atheist philosopher and author Paul Kurtz. [3] It brought together two organizations: the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (founded by Kurtz in 1976) and the Council for Secular Humanism (founded by Kurtz in 1980).
Free Inquiry is a bimonthly journal of secular humanist opinion and commentary published by the Council for Secular Humanism, a program of the Center for Inquiry. Philosopher Paul Kurtz was the editor-in-chief from its inception in 1980 until stepping down in 2010. [2] Kurtz was succeeded by Tom Flynn who worked as Editor in Chief until 2021.
In January 2015, the Center for Inquiry carried out a corporate consolidation, merging with its two affiliates, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and the Council for Secular Humanism. [ 23 ] Lindsay and Center for Inquiry founder Paul Kurtz had disagreements over the operation of the organization which drew the attention of The New York Times .
Paul Kurtz (December 21, 1925 – October 20, 2012) [2] was an American scientific skeptic and secular humanist.He has been called "the father of secular humanism". [3] He was Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo, having previously also taught at Vassar, Trinity, and Union colleges, and the New School for Social Research.
Thomas W. Flynn (August 18, 1955 – August 23, 2021) [1] was an American author, journalist, novelist, executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, and editor of its journal Free Inquiry. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] He was also director of the Robert Green Ingersoll Birthplace Museum and the Freethought Trail.
