The Montana Museum of Art & Culture was established shortly after the founding of the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. The year was 1895 and the state's flagship university, established in 1893, had its first President, Oscar J. Craig, and fifty enrolled students.

In 1995, the Missoula Museum of the Arts became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. [10] Within the main collection, the Contemporary American Indian Art Collection (CAIAC) was established in 1997 following a gift of prints by Native American artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith . [ 11 ]
