It stands at the end of a 2,000-foot-long (610 m) breakwater at mouth of Oswego River , extending one-half mile (0.80 km) out onto Lake Ontario .

The steamship Halyoke missed hitting the lighthouse on August 30, 1912, when its steering went out. Although the current headed the ship directly at the light, the captain put the engines into full reverse, and the ship ran up on the rock but then backed up.
