[2] Mulatu Teshome was elected by the parliament to a six-year term. [1] Incumbent president Girma Wolde-Giorgis was barred from seeking re-election due to term limits.

President Mulatu Teshome resigned suddenly on 24 October 2018, and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed chose Sahle-Work as Teshome's successor.
