A friend found some nice windows for free just to haul them off. Good books are available for pole building and I wish you the best of luck. justincasei812 Member # Posted: 16 Jan 2013 20:19 Reply My girlfriends sister and brother in law have a pole barn cabin near Beaver lake (near Spratt, MI south west of Alpena, MI).

The only way Id do a modified 'pole building' as a cabin is if I thought maybe someday Id build a proper house and the original cabin could become the outbuilding (garage, toolshed, workshop). As a variation in thinking consider this (Ive seen it done): An actual pole building with big doors on each end but offset to one side of the width.
Pole construction was one option I was thinking about just cause the book came across my hands. To be honest, the biggest draw was the treehouse like effect it would have, as the property was logged 30+ years ago and there aren't a lot of large timbers still standing. Seemed like some interesting possibilities.
1) a small concrete footer poured at the bottom of the hole that the pole just sits on. The remainder of the hole is backfilled with the dirt that was removed from drilling the hole. 2) the pole embedded in a relatively small amount of concrete, perhaps 1/3 the total size and depth of the hole, with the remainder backfilled with dirt.

3. Use nothing less than 4x6 PT rated for foundation use! 6x6s provide more "meat", but are more expensive and heavier. If cost is a consideration or if you will be working alone, 4x6s might make more sense. An excellent website to review for post frame construction is www.pole-barn.info 4.
