I VERY lightly work the fine wheel along the machete blade if it's bad (don't let it rest or get hot) .....it takes some finesse.... definitely use a file to finish.... The neighbor likes to bring me his roughed up machete and I'm not about to take a file to it for him - a couple swipes and it's back in "chopping" sharp.

I use a brush axe for what most would chop at with a machete. It works every time. I ordered a Estwing machete last week and just got it. It is well built like all the other Estwing tools I have. The handle is comparable to a Estwing hammer. The blade is 10 inches. The saw back looks cheesy (like it want cut much).

It can be used as a one handed weapon or tool where an axe is heavy and will require 2 hands to get good force from it even if much heavy in weight at the end. Axe is going to burn more calories to use. Machete will be much easier to carve with if needed. machete is much easier to sharpen.

I have the Cold Steel Kukri Machete. Overall length 18”. It has an extremely comfortable and secure feeling grip, and the weight at the end of the blade makes chopping easier. I use it all the time. I recently ordered a Cold Steel Cutlass Machete. Overall length of 30” and a steel reinforced knuckle bow guard. 1055 Carbon Steel like the Kukri.

I got a new machete that came very dull. Decided to get out my old coleman hatchet also which was never sharpened. Took a old file, cleaned it w a wire brush, and started to file away on the hatchet and machete. Hatchet is getting pretty damn sharp, machete is sharper but still pretty dull...

The CT1 is decently thick. As to hardness, well, Ontario's 1095, it is a little lower on the RC scale and for the purpose of keeping it from chipping and ease of sharpening in the field. Get a nice DMT folding diamond sharpener and just get used to frequent sharpening in the field. I keep a 12" Ontario (CT1) in a couple of my bug out bags ...
