The following is a list of the 78 schools who field men's lacrosse teams and the 133 schools who field women's lacrosse teams in NCAA Division I competition, plus two schools that have planned to begin fielding Division I women's lacrosse teams in 2026. Conference affiliations are current for the next 2025 NCAA lacrosse season.
The Lower Division Initiative was a program that began in 2005 to extend the University of Baltimore's position to once again offer the first two years of the baccalaureate degree. In April 2005, the University System of Maryland 's board of regents approved plans that would allow UBalt to start accepting freshmen and sophomores.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County was founded in 1966, and athletic director and men's lacrosse coach Dick Watts started the first team in 1968 at the NCAA Division II level. The Loyola–Towson lacrosse rivalry is an intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between Baltimore's Loyola Greyhounds of the Patriot League and Towson Tigers of the Colonial Athletic Association. The teams first met in 1959 and competed at the NCAA Division II level until transferring up to Division I in 1980 for Towson and in 1982 for Loyola.
It was also the home field for the professional lacrosse team, the Baltimore Bayhawks, for the 2001 and 2003 Major League Lacrosse seasons.
