From 1998 to 2016 Toowoomba State High School consisted of two campuses, the Mount Lofty campus and the Wilsonton campus. [6] In 2016, it was decided the two campuses would become two separate schools. [7] In August 2016, a public survey was conducted in order to determine Wilsonton Campus' new name, uniform as well as sports logo for 2017 onwards.
The school was established on 1 January 1982 [5] as Christian Outreach College Toowoomba at the back of Highlands Church, [6] [1] which was founded in 1978. [ 7 ] The school changed its name from Christian Outreach College Toowoomba to Highlands Christian College on 21 January 2019.
The choice of a school for girls was made because the church felt this was the area of greatest need as there were a number of secondary schools for boys already available. The initial plan was to hire a house to commence the school while the school building already designed by Toowoomba architect Harry Marks was constructed. [8]

The school has a small village atmosphere at its 5-hectare (12-acre) campus on the edge of the Dividing Range, and has developed a variety of facilities on its East Toowoomba location. These include three sporting ovals, an outdoor 25 metres (82 ft) swimming pool, a multipurpose court, and the St Aidans School Chapel.
