Algonquin is a village in McHenry and Kane counties, Illinois, [3] in the United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 40 miles (64 km) northwest of the Loop. As of the 2020 census, the village's population was 29,700. The village is known as "The Gem of the Fox River Valley", referring to the location of its downtown.
The Dundee Power Company built a small hydroelectric plant at the site in 1912, [2] [26] but in the 1920s, Detroit Edison began supplying power to the village, and the millsite was abandoned. In 1931, the village decided to demolish the building, [36] but Henry Ford, who had contemplated purchasing the site since 1922, bought it instead. [26]
It closed in 1998. A second Santa's Village opened in 1957 near Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County, California, staying open until 1979. The last Santa's Village opened in 1959 in the Chicago suburb of East Dundee and closed in 2006. The park reopened under new ownership in 2011 and continues to operate to this day as Santa's Village.
