The Lafayette County Courthouse is located in Oxford, Mississippi and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [ 1 ] The current structure was constructed in 1872 to replace an earlier building burned during the Civil War by Union troops directed by General Andrew Jackson Smith .
The superintendent is voted on and elected by the school board. From 2013 through 2017 the superintendent was Brian Harvey. Harvey graduated from the district in 1990 and worked in the district for 17 years; as a middle and high school teacher, the assistant principal at Oxford High School, and the principal at both Central Elementary and Oxford Middle School.
Oxford is in central Lafayette County in northern Mississippi, about 75 miles (121 km) south-southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 26.7 square miles (69.2 km 2 ), of which 26.6 square miles (68.9 km 2 ) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km 2 ), or 0.35%, is water.
