Lovers Point SMR is located off the coast of the Monterey Peninsula, at the southern end of Monterey Bay. It covers an area of.30 sq. miles (0.8 km²). The reserve is directly offshore from Lovers Point Park, a small local park. Lovers Point SMR is one of four marine protected areas bordering the Monterey Peninsula.
The sanctuary is also a site for recreational activities, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, viewing wildlife, and fishing. [13] In an effort to balance recreation and conservation, the California Fish and Game Commission established a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) within the nearshore waters of the sanctuary in 2002.
