Des Moines Area Community College was created on March 18, 1966. [3] The first classes were held on the Ankeny [4] Campus in 1968. DMACC has experienced tremendous growth in the last two decades. In the fall of 2000, 10,803 students were enrolled at DMACC. By the fall of 2011, that number grew to 25,425.
The college was closed in 1929 and the business district continued to serve the residents of the neighborhood. The extension of the Second Avenue street car line in the early 20th century helped develop and sustain the neighborhood. In 1954 the college campus was sold to a developer who built Park Fair Shopping Center on the site.
The buildings built from the 1920s on were, for the most part, built along Euclid Avenue. Euclid was transformed from a residential street into a state highway at this time. Highland Park is the largest neighborhood-centered commercial district in the Des Moines area. [2] The district remains largely intact with only a few lots that are vacant.

The historic district lies north of Kingman Boulevard and south of Cottage Grove Avenue, between 27th Street on the east and 31st Street on the west. It is composed of three full blocks and parts of two others in the Kingman and University plats. The plats are unique in Des Moines as they are oriented east to west as opposed to north to south. [2]
