A competitive diving platform at an outdoor swimming pool. A diving platform or diving tower is a type of structure used for competitive diving. It consists of a vertical rigid "tower" with one or more horizontal platforms extending out over a deep pool of water. In platform diving, the diver jumps from a high stationary surface.
Women's diving debut happened at the 1912 Summer Olympics in the platform event and was expanded to springboard diving at the 1920 Summer Olympics. A parallel platform diving event for men, called "plain high diving", was presented at the Games of the V Olympiad. No acrobatic moves were allowed, only a simple straight dive off the platform. [3]
The site was first developed as a 950 square metres (10,200 sq ft) [3] swimming pool in 1937 and included an art deco diving board. [4] [5] At the time it had the highest diving board and was the largest open air swimming pool in Europe. [6] When it was opened it was simply known as "The Pool", becoming branded as Tropicana in 1983. [7]
