The planning process for bus rapid transit service in San Antonio began in September 2002. Fredericksburg Road was chosen by VIA as the preferred corridor in September 2006, as a result of studies by VIA and the San Antonio–Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (now the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, or AAMPO). VIA's original logo, used until 2014. VIA was created in 1977 when the citizens of Bexar County voted in favor of a one-half cent sales tax to fund the service. Subsequently, VIA purchased transit assets from the City of San Antonio and began operations in March 1978, taking its name from the Latin word for "road".
The list excludes charter buses, private bus operators, paratransit systems, and trolleybus systems. Figures for daily ridership, number of vehicles, and daily vehicle revenue miles are accurate as of 2009 and come from the FTA National Transit Database.
Its two lines were inaugurated on 30 June 2014 and connect the city centre with the western suburbs. As of 2025, the network operates 13.2 km (8.2 mi) of route. There are 19 stations, 14 of which are underground while 5 are surface-level light rail stops. It consists of 18 Urbos 3 light rail vehicles (LRVs) manufactured by the Spanish company CAF.
It also provides an alternate route (versus I-10 and Loop 1604) between Seguin and portions of the northeastern San Antonio metropolitan area. Between San Antonio and Cibolo, FM 78 is a four-lane road, dropping to a two-lane road until McQueeney, before becoming a four-lane divided route to I-10/SH 46.
