Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a historic site located on a promontory at the mouth of the Tyne at Tynemouth. The medieval Benedictine priory was protected by walls, towers, and a gatehouse. [ 1 ] The heraldry of the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside includes three crowns commemorating the three kings who have been buried in the priory.
In the early 700s at the latest, Tynemouth Priory had been founded. It was reputedly the burial place of the King of Deira and Christian martyr, Oswine of Deira.The priory began to flourish, but suffered in the 9th century from Viking raids, eventually being abandoned.
The medieval Tynemouth Priory and Castle stand on a headland overlooking both the mouth of the river and the North Sea, with the town centre lying immediately west of the headland. Historically part of Northumberland until 1974, the town was a county borough which included the nearby town of North Shields.
