Poinciana (English: / p ɔɪ n s i ˈ æ n ə /) is a settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Osceola and Polk counties in the U.S. state of Florida. It is part of the Greater Orlando area. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 69,309.
Osceola County was created in 1887. On July 21, 1821, Florida was divided into two counties, named Escambia County to the west and St. John's County to the east. In 1824, the southern part of St. John's County became Mosquito County, with Enterprise as the county seat. In 1844, Brevard County was carved out from Mosquito County.
A school named "Poinciana Park" was located in the western half of mainland Monroe County around this time, [12] but it is unknown if this was connected to the development. The hurricane of 1926 destroyed all structures at Poinciana, and despite attempts to rebuild and continued newspaper advertising, the project was subsequently abandoned. [13]
In November 1996, Florida Hospital applied with the Agency for Health Care Administration to build a hospital in Celebration, Florida for $1.2 million.
