The Zagat Survey, commonly referred to as Zagat (stylized in all caps; / z ə ˈ ɡ æ t /, zə-GAT) and established by Tim and Nina Zagat in 1979, is an organization which collects and correlates the ratings of restaurants by diners. For their first guide, covering New York City, the Zagats surveyed their friends.
Over the next three years, however, steadily improving word-of-mouth pushed its food score to 28, a rating that put it in the company of some of the city's top restaurants, including Jean Georges.
In 2013, Zagat gave it a food rating of 24, with a decor rating of 27, and wrote: "'Prepare to be swept away' by this 'gorgeous' Village American." [1] In 1998, as food critic for The New York Times, Ruth Reichl gave the restaurant a mixed, one star review. [3] She criticized the restaurant's Beef Wellington. [3]
The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is the result of a poll of over 1,000 independent experts, who each cast votes for establishments where they have enjoyed their best restaurant experiences. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy is gender-balanced and contains 27 regions around the world.
Balthazar is also known for celebrity-watching; in 2012, Fodor's ranked it # 1 in New York City in that category. [23] [24] In 2013, Zagat's gave Balthazar a food rating of 24 (out of 30), a decor rating of 24, and ranked it the second best French brasserie restaurant in New York City. [4]
