He was a longtime member of Limerick Corporation, elected first as an independent and later as a member of Gluais Linn , Clann na Poblachta (1950, 1955), and Fine Gael (1960, 1967, 1974, 1979). [6] He served as Mayor of Limerick on five occasions (1954–1957, 1967–1968 and 1976–1977). He was made a Freeman of the city in 1995.
