Hank Williams IV is nothing more than a stage name,” Ricky insists. “My real name is Ricky Fitzgerald as everyone knows.” Most every time Ricky introduces himself, whether on stage, in a video, etc., he uses both names, Hank Williams IV and Ricky Fitzgerald. “Ever since my first performance, it stuck with me.

And also, there's a superb Japanese box set of Hank if you can find it, which has a comprehensive selection of Hank. This set has these recordings as originally issued by MGM, meaning some later records will have drum/rhythm instrument overdubs, but no string overdubs. The MGM recordings in mono are best as first released by MGM.

  5. Best Hank Williams compilation on CD? - Steve Hoffman Music...

Something I discovered from the recent PBS Country Music special was that Hank's 1947 Move it On Over just might be the very first Rock n Roll song. For the longest time, I thought it was Ike Turner's 1951 Rocket 88 (credited to Jackie Brenston). Bill Haley's 1955 Rock Around the Clock is just a pale imitation of the Hank Williams song.

These days, my ears prefer Lefty and Ralph Stanley - largely because I overplayed Hank when I was younger. But Hank’s great humor paired with his ability to convey loneliness in songs are so strong This is probably old news to most folks on this thread, but there’s a diner in Bristol, TN that some claim was the last stop on Hank’s last ride.

This is the video for Tear In My Beer featuring Hank Williams Jr. dueting with his father Hank Williams Sr. I always thought it was a really cool use of technology to do something that was really different at the time (1989).

  9. Hank Williams' never released material - Steve Hoffman Music...

We really should "volunteer" Steve to get this record recorded on new tape and also digitized to preserve it. It looks like a 78 and there is only one song per side. Looks to be the only copy in the world, and in the hands of Hank Williams III. It would be a tragedy if it broke. It features "Mother's Side by Me" and "Lonely Mound of Clay".

  10. Songs that namecheck Hank Williams Sr. - Steve Hoffman Music...

It's no surprise that there was a flurry of tribute/memorial songs to Hank in 1953/54. The most noteworthy is probably Jimmie Logsdon's double-sider "The Death of Hank Williams" b/w "Hank Williams Sings the Blues No More." It's an uncanny reproduction of Hank & His Drifting Cowboys' sound.
