Sydney Harbour [1] (Mi'kmawi'simk: L'sipuktuk) is the 10-mile long Y-shaped inlet of the Atlantic, oriented southwest-northeast on the northeast shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. At its upper reaches, the harbour forks to form two arms: the Northwest Arm and the South Arm.
The highway was built in the late 1950s - early 1960s and extended from North Sydney to Point Edward, but branched off in Point Edward and continued along Nova Scotia Route 305 then Trunk 5 until Sydney River. Mary Lake is a lake located in Muskoka District in Ontario, Canada. The town of Port Sydney is located at its southern end. The lake was named by surveyor Alexander Murray after his daughter Mary Ellen Murray in 1853. [1] Both ends of the lake are connected with the North Muskoka River.
The Sydney River valley is glacial with thick deposits, kames, eskers and outwash gravels creating a series of shallow lakes connected by narrow channels. This low valley was a traditional canoe portage used by the Mi'kmaq for travelling between Sydney Harbour and the East Bay of Bras d'Or Lake . [ 6 ]

Spanish Bay opens to the north-west directly onto the southern terminus of the Cabot Strait and so to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.The bay measures approximately 7 nautical miles (13 km; 8.1 mi) wide at its mouth, between Alder Point on Boularderie Island to the north-west, and Low Point on Cape Breton Island to the south-east.
After 1826, the General Mining Association consolidated the various coal mines around Sydney Harbour and greatly increased the shipping of coal to ports on the Atlantic coast. [6] In support of this effort, a lighthouse was built at Low Point in 1832 to aid vessels entering Sydney harbour. [7] This first lighthouse was built at a cost of £770.
