GT Academy was conceived by Darren Cox, former Nissan Europe executive, in 2006 to help Sony PlayStation racing gamers become professional racing drivers. Jann Mardenborough took part in the 2011 GT Academy competition, [17] which was a joint venture between Nissan and the developers of "Gran Turismo" with the goal of identifying potential racers via online racing events. Mardenborough won the competition despite having no prior professional racing experience thanks to his outstanding talent.
GT Academy was released on May 1, 2012, as a free standalone title on the PlayStation Network as a collaboration between Nissan and Polyphony Digital.
