William Wanton (September 15, 1670 – December 1733) [1] was a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, serving a short term prior to his death. He spent most of his adult life in the civil and military service of the colony and commanded a sloop for chasing privateers .

Gideon Wanton (October 20, 1693 – September 12, 1767) was a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations who served for two separate one-year terms. His father was Joseph Wanton, a shipbuilder in Tiverton , and his mother was Sarah Freeborn, the daughter of Gideon and Sarah (Brownell) Freeborn.
Wanton was born to Governor Joseph Wanton and Mary Winthrop Wanton of Newport on February 8, 1730. He graduated from Harvard University in 1751 and was involved with privateers during the French and Indian War, possibly where he attained the title of colonel. Wanton's first wife Abigail Honeyman died in 1771; they had 7 children.
