The University of Ontario Institute of Technology was founded in 2002 by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a way to facilitate the influx of college-bound students in 2003. [3] While the school joined Ontario University Athletics in 2006, the ice hockey team did not begin play until a year later.
The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks compete in badminton, soccer, women's lacrosse, curling, golf, rowing, dance, basketball, and hockey. Formerly, the Ridgebacks had a tennis program. The Steelheads play their home games at the CAA Centre in Brampton. The team relocated from nearby Mississauga in 2024. As the Mississauga Steelheads, the team previously won the Emms Trophy as regular season champions of the Central division and the Bobby Orr Trophy as playoffs champions of the Eastern conference during the 2016–17 OHL season .
