Oban High School opened in 1890 as Oban Higher Grade School. The building was designed by Alexander Shairp. [2] Former teachers at the school have included Iain Crichton Smith and John MacKay, Baron MacKay of Ardbrecknish. Oban airport links the mainland with the islands of Coll, Colonsay, Islay and Tiree. [3] The airstrips on the Islands of Coll and Colonsay, also operated by Argyll and Bute council, have benefitted from extensive upgrading to enable them to attain CAA licensing in 2008 to allow for commercial traffic. [4] Scheduled flights began in 2008. [5] [6]
It is the only airline to operate a service between Oban and Islay, Coll, Tiree and Colonsay islands; routes subsidised by Argyll and Bute Council. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Since April 2024 they have also operated flights between Benbecula and Stornoway subsidised by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar .
