James Squire, alternatively known as James Squires, (bapt. 18 December 1754 – 16 May 1822) was a First Fleet convict transported to Australia. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Squire is credited with the first successful cultivation of hops in Australia around the start of the 19th century.
James Squire beers are mostly produced by the Malt Shovel Brewery in Sydney. The brewery has won various awards including: Champion Australasian Brewery, 2000 and 2003 (Australian International Beer Awards), [ 33 ] and Best Bohemian-Style Pilsener, 2008 (World Beer Cup). [ 34 ]
James Squire was the first to successfully cultivate hops in 1804, and he also opened a pub and brewed beer. The Government Gazette from 1806 mentions that he was awarded a cow herd from the government for his efforts.
