Saint Sylvester's Church is a Jesuit Mission on the Red Rock Indian Band on section Lake Helen 53A. It was established in 1852, and is locally called Opoo-gan-asin (pipestone). [ 1 ] The first mass was held on February 29, 1852, in the Hudson Bay barn.
The Sisters of Mercy bought the ruined buildings of the monastery and the St. Sylvester Church in 1891, which were then restored from 1896 to 1908, thanks to the financial support of John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquis of Bute and his son Colum Crichton-Stuart, according to a project made by the architect John Kinross.
On June 10, 1902, Pope Leo XIII appointed James Keane from the Archdiocese of St. Paul as the third bishop of Cheyenne. Keane came to Wyoming at a time of increasing population and economic expansion. Keane successfully recruited priests to serve in the diocese. [13] The diocese was incorporated according to Wyoming law.
