Florida is the most hurricane-prone US state, with subtropical or tropical water on a lengthy coastline. From 1851 to 2006, Florida has been struck by 114 hurricanes, 37 of them major—category 3 and above. [32] It is rare for a hurricane season to pass without any impact in the state by at least a tropical storm.
The peninsular coast of the US state of Florida is formed from contact with three main large bodies of water: the open Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the south, and the Gulf of Mexico to the West (making part of the larger Gulf Coast of the United States).
The Gulf Coast climate is humid subtropical, although Southwest Florida features a tropical climate. Much of the year is warm to hot along the Gulf Coast, while the three winter months bring periods of cool (or rarely, cold) weather mixed with mild temperatures. The area is highly vulnerable to hurricanes as well as floods and severe thunderstorms.
