Gilbert is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States, along the Guyandotte River. The population was 333 at the 2020 census . [ 4 ] Gilbert was incorporated in 1918 and named for Gilbert Creek , which derives its name from the name of an early traveler in the area who was killed by Native Americans .
The original building was built as a frame dwelling, with subsequent additions in 1912, 1918, and 1925. The hospital was opened in 1912 by Dr. Clinton Constantine “C.C.” Barnett [2] and served the African American population of Huntington. The Barnett Nursing School opened in 1918. The hospital closed in 1939.
Mercy Gilbert opened in 2006 to provide health care in the rapidly growing Gilbert area. It was the first full-service and second hospital to open in Gilbert, which previously had no hospitals of its own. A tower under construction at Mercy Gilbert will house a branch of Phoenix Children's Hospital, in which Dignity Health holds a minority stake.
