Pakistan had earlier beaten Netherlands 3–1 in a pool match and were unbeaten in the tournament. From a tense battle of skill and attrition, Pakistan emerged 3-2 winners over Netherlands in the final.
Akhtar Rasool (born 13 January 1954) (Urdu: اختر رسول) is a field hockey player, captain and olympian from Pakistan who won the gold medal with the Men's National Hockey Team at the Hockey World Cup 1978, and again in 1982. He played as Center Half for the Pakistan hockey team.
A right winger from Pakistan, he led Pakistan to Hockey World Cup glory in 1978. Not only did Pakistan win the World Cup under his captaincy, it also completed a grand slam by winning the Champions Trophy and an Asian Games gold medal as well in 1978. [4] Islahuddin played between 1967 and 1978. He was capped 130 times and scored 137 goals.
The Hockey World Cup was first conceived by Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan. He proposed his idea to the FIH through Patrick Rowley, the first editor of World Hockey magazine. Their idea was approved on 26 October 1969 and adopted by the FIH Council at a meeting in Brussels on 12 April 1970.
