    It is akin to the Series 4 to Series 5 as seen on the 2nd generation FC RX-7. Whether the series designations for the RX-7 came from official Mazda documentation or were created by enthusiasts I have no idea. The point is that the 2009+ RX-8 is not a large enough change to warrant the dubbing of a 2nd generation as it is a mid-generation refresh.--
