Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast or open-cut mining and in larger contexts mega-mining, [1] is a surface mining technique that extracts rock or minerals from the earth. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful ore or rocks are found near the surface where the overburden is relatively thin.
A box cut (box pit) is a small open cut built to supply a secure and safe entrance as access to a slope to an underground mine. Generally the box cut is sunk until sufficiently unweathered rock is found to permit the development of the decline. [ 1 ]
The Rolleston Coal Mine is an open-cut coal mine located in Central Queensland, Australia, with reserves amounting to 600 million tonnes of thermal coal. The mine has an annual production capacity of 14 million tonnes. [1] It is one of numerous coal mines in the Bowen Basin. The mine is wholly owned by Glencore. [2]
The mine works as an open cut operation and Mount Fubilan has been reduced to a deep pit in the ground in the course of the excavation of the Ok Tedi Mine. By 31 December 2004, 8,896,577 tonnes of copper concentrate (containing 2,853,265 tonnes of copper metal and 7,035,477 troy ounces or 218.8278 tonnes of gold metal) had been mined.
The Middlemount Coal Mine is an open-cut mine located approximately 90 kilometres north-east of Emerald and some 7 kilometres west of the township of Middlemount in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The mine produces medium-volatile pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal and semi-hard coking coal for the export market. Full scale operations at the open ...
The workings include a large open pit mine 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) wide at the surface completed in 2019, three operating underground mines (Grasberg Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone and Big Gossan) and four concentrators. The mine is a high-volume, low-cost underground mining operation, producing and milling more than 72 million tonnes of ore ...
The Olive Downs Complex is an open-cut mine for metallurgical coal in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. It is located 40 kilometres south-east of Moranbah, about 140 km south-west of Mackay. The mine is accessed via the Sheldon Bridge over the Isaac River. [1]
Open-cut mining operations began in 1981. [3] Underground mining along the same coal seam started at the Southern Colliery in 1988. [3] Waste methane gas is collected at the mine and used to generate electricity. The maximum capacity of the power station is 45 MW. [4] Operations at the plant began in November 2006.
