Copper was discovered in the Keweenaw in the 1830s; soon after, the US government built Fort Wilkins near Copper Harbor to maintain order in the area. Keweenaw County was split off from Houghton County in 1861, with the county seat in Eagle River. [2] The early government and commercial buildings in Eagle River are now a Historic District.
The Keweenaw County Historical Society, established in 1981, [25] has five locations throughout Keweenaw County, Michigan. [4] These locations include the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse , Central Mine Historic District , Phoenix Church , the Rathbone School and the Bammert Blacksmith Shop. [ 4 ]
Copper Harbor is located at the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, bordering Lake Superior.It is one of the best natural harbors in Keweenaw County and was a quick focus of attention after copper was discovered on the peninsula in the 1830s.
