Berlin wool work is a style of embroidery similar to today's needlepoint that was particularly popular in Europe and America from 1804 to 1875. [1]: 66 It is typically executed with wool yarn on canvas, [2] worked in a single stitch such as cross stitch or tent stitch, although Beeton's book of Needlework (1870) describes 15 different stitches for use in Berlin work.

Two principal techniques are used to produce seed beads: the wound method and the drawn method. The wound method is the more-traditional technique, is more time-consuming, and is no longer used in modern bead production: in this technique, a chunk of glass known in glassmaking as a gather and composed mainly of silica is heated on an iron bar until molten.
Originally, the bead designs were not fused but glued to cardboard or masonite boards and used as trivets. [9] Later, when the beads were made of polyethylene, it became possible to fuse them with a flat iron. HAMA began producing pegboard beads in 1971, but they only became fusible by the late 70s. [9]
