MiniDVD or 8 cm DVD (also "3 inch DVD") is a DVD disc with a reduced diameter of 8 centimetres (3.15 in). It has been most commonly used in camcorders due to its compact size. [ 1 ] The most common MiniDVDs are single layered and hold 1.4 GB of data, but there are variants that can offer up to 5.2 GB of storage space, through a combination of ...
DVD-RAM (DVD Random Access Memory) is a DVD-based disc specification presented in 1996 by the DVD Forum, which specifies rewritable DVD-RAM media and the appropriate DVD writers. DVD-RAM media have been used in computers as well as camcorders and personal video recorders since 1998.
DVD+R, DVD+RW and the recordable Blu-ray formats are immune from buffer underrun as these discs contain technology that allows the recorder's write mechanism to precisely locate the end of the recorded track and to seamlessly carry on from where it left off. This list includes both CD, DVD and Blu-ray recordable and rewritable media manufacturers (like Ritek), and disc replicators (companies that replicate discs with pre-recorded content, like Sony DADC).
DVD±R/W (also written as, DVD±R/RW, DVD±R/±RW, DVD+/-RW, DVD±R(W) and other arbitrary ways) handles all common writable disc types, but not DVD-RAM. Note: Blu-ray disc recorders can record full high definition videos on BD-Rs and BD-REs. Disadvantages include: [citation needed] Slow initial access/load times due to the optical nature of the disc; Limited rewritability on DVD-RW/+RW discs (typically around 1000). DVD-RAM is better suited for high frequency re-recording (around 100,000 rewrites)
cDVD ("Compact DVD") discs, also known as mini-DVD [1] discs (not to be confused with 8 cm DVDs), are regular data CDs that contain MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 video structured in accordance with the DVD-Video specifications (such as a VIDEO_TS directory containing properly authored IFO/BUP and VOB files, typically on a Mode 1 data track formatted with the UDF 1.02 filesystem).
DVD-RAM may be running last-place in the computer community, but since Panasonic (for one that I know of) has chosen DVD-RAM for all of its DVD recorders it appears that DVD-RAM will be getting some significant new sales volume. This should drive down the manufacturing cost and drive further adoption in both the video and computer communities.
