In August 2009, students from Decatur County went to a new high school located on Highway 84. The old high school is now home for Bainbridge Middle School (grades 7-8), while Hutto Middle School holds grades 5-6 while Potter Street, Elcan King, Jones Wheat, John Johnson, and West Bainbridge Elementary hold PK-4.
Each year, the lower grade was dropped and a higher grade was added, until 1997 when the school became a 9–12 high school, Eastside High. The first graduating class graduated in May 1998. In 2002, a new addition was built onto the school to help accommodate more growth. In 2006, the school had an enrollment of 1,441 and a staff of 100 teachers.
The school system was also converted from a K-7 elementary and 8-12 high school grade system into a middle school 6–8 grade program beginning with the 1973/1974 school year. The curriculum was also updated to have studies more balanced, inclusive, and diverse, with content culturally and historically significant to racial minorities.
Up until the 1950s, ARC was for white males only. The 1951–1957 Richmond Academy boys' baseball team was ranked as one of the top 10 Georgia state sports dynasties. [4] It has teams in many sports. During the 1950s the school became coeducational, admitting female students. In 1964, the school began to admit minorities and became desegregated.
