The Cleveland Orchestra is an American orchestra based in Cleveland, Ohio. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Founded in 1918 by the pianist and impresario Adella Prentiss Hughes , the orchestra is one of the five American orchestras informally referred to as the " Big Five ". [ 3 ]
The Cleveland Orchestra began a long-running association with the Columbia Masterworks label under conductor Artur RodziĆski. Successors Erich Leinsdorf , George Szell , and Lorin Maazel all recorded for Columbia, with some early Szell records being assigned to Columbia's budget sub-label, Epic.

The pop and R&B artist will perform "An Evening with John Legend — A Night of Songs with the Cleveland Orchestra" at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at Blossom Music Center. It will be his Cleveland Orchestra debut.
George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra recorded mostly for Epic. When Epic dropped classical music, the roster and catalogue was moved to Columbia Masterworks Records. Columbia released its first pop stereo albums in the summer of 1958. All of the first dozen or so were stereo versions of albums already available in mono.
